Mission

ANTABIO is a start-up biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery of novel drugs to treat and prevent antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Until recently bacterial infections were viewed as benign medical issues thanks to the efficiency of antibiotics.  Sadly, this scenario has been radically modified over the last decade due to the rapid emergence of bacterial pathogens that are resistant to most if not all antibiotics (see the emergence of NDM-1 enterobacteriacea).

To replace the antibiotics that are becoming inefficient, innovative molecules are urgently needed. To date there are no novel antibiotic templates at a late stage of development targeting hospital-acquired infections caused by multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Acinetobacter baumannii.

This shortfall is particularly worrying as the market’s needs are vast and growing due to an aging population increasingly exposed to the risks of infection, particularly in hospital settings. ANTABIO addresses this major unmet medical need by developing first-in-class drugs that inhibit the key virulence and drug-resistance mechanisms of pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria.

Hospital-acquired infections: “No action today, no cure tomorrow”

5-10% hospital patients in US and Europe develop hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections. The consequences are dramatic: up to 75,000 deaths per year, 2.5 million additional hospital days due to drug-resistant bacterial infections and an average additional cost of 1.5 billion euros for healthcare systems. This major global medical threat can affect anyone in the world, irrespective of social class and gender. In 2004 the World Health Organization identified infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria as the number one disease requiring priority medicines. Accordingly, World Health Day 2011 was devoted to antimicrobial resistance (“No action today, no cure tomorrow“).

ANTABIO: delivering tomorrow’s antibacterials

We are a Toulouse, France-based biopharmaceutical company incorporated in October 2009. We develop innovative therapeutic solutions for the treatment of nosocomial infections based on our patented technology and unique know-how.

ANTABIO’s first-in-class small molecule compounds offer a synergistic solution to the shortfall of the current antibacterial arsenal. We develop new drugs that:

  • Partner antibiotics for them to regain their activity against multi- or pan-drug resistant Gram-negative pathogens such as NDM-1  bacteria.

  • Prevent infections caused by virulent and multi-drug resistant bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) that are responsible for severe nosocomial-acquired infections as well as other common community-acquired conditions like urinary tract infections and food poisoning.

At ANTABIO we believe that success in curbing the emergence of drug-resistant infections will only be achieved through a collaborative enterprise. ANTABIO’s products and know-how offer multiple opportunities to collaborate, from research to co-development. That is why we work closely with our partners (academia, biotechs and large pharmaceutical companies) to join our expertise and develop more effective combination therapies.
